Higher Fees For Residents

  • YMCA Model: As a 501(c)(3), the Y has high overhead and membership-based revenue requirements. This often leads to higher monthly dues compared to town recreation departments.

  • Town Model: Residents already support the town through taxes. A town-run facility can offer "resident rates" that are significantly lower because the goal is community wellness, not meeting a corporate budget.

Long-term Value

  • Ownership: If the town builds it, the town owns the land and the building forever. If the Y builds on town land (via a ground lease), the town often loses control over how that space is used or what is charged.

  • Control: With a town gym, the citizens (via the Select Board or Recreation Commission) decide the hours, the programs, and the fees. With a YMCA, those decisions are made by a private board.
